Vectis Radio Supporting the Islands Community
Hello, I am Lisa Beaney from the Isle of Wight and I will be walking from Fort William to Aviemore from May 16th. I’ll be carrying everything I need for the week…. I will be backpacking and wild camping and hopefully completing on the 21st May.
I have decided to do this to raise money for the Alzheimers Cafe on the Isle of Wight because I’ve seen the amazing work they do and support they provide. This can be life changing for the people involved. When a loved one has Alzheimers having a good support network is vital. The Alzheimers Cafe provides that. As well as regular meetings they have their new base at Parklands that provides a community cafe and wellbeing club amongst many other things.
To do this takes money and that is where I hope to help. Every penny you donate will go towards supporting them.
I will be travelling to Fort William by train – leaving Euston at 9pm on the 15th May….. I need to get to Aviemore on the 21st May to catch the train home! In between are the Highlands of Scotland, some of which is very remote with no mobile signal (or places to restock with food!!). I’ll need to filter my own drinking water and make sure wherever I stop I leave no trace when I leave….
All funds raised will be passed to the charity irrespective of whether my target is reached, not reached or exceeded.
Day 1 – the train was late arriving at Fort William so I made a later start than planned, meaning I was walking through the hottest part of the day and it really has been hot up here today. I’ve walked 15 miles so far and set up camp for the night by the river Spean somewhere in between Spean Bridge and Roybridge I’m planning on getting up early in the morning so that I can miss the worst of the heat and hopefully make it a bit easier than today. The scenery is stunning though and the scale of the mountains here are really something else.
Day 2 – 17 miles it’s been really hot again today. I’ve taken far more breaks than I did yesterday just to try and keep it manageable really and to make sure I didn’t overheat. I’m now pitched up on a beach at the end of a loch and I’m the only one here. It is so peaceful and amazingly beautiful. The weather looks like it’s going to be good for the rest of the week but I wouldn’t mind if it cooled down a little bit. Some of the areas marked as forest on the map were plantations that have now been cut down so where I was hoping to walk in a shade of trees this afternoon I actually ended up in a very exposed area with absolutely no shade so yes, it’s been hard but it’s worth it ! Day 3 – I woke up to the most amazing view of lakes this morning. I woke up a bit later than yesterday and didn’t rush getting going because it was just really lovely unfortunately as the Sun comes up so do the images and they were out enforced first thing but when the wind picked up and the Sun got up a bit facing vanished it was quite cold overnight but luckily I was quite snug in my sleeping bag in my tent I’ve covered about 19 miles today and I’m just now camped in a little clearing in the woods just off the East Highland Way. I think the highlights for me today has to be the Pat fools where I stopped for lunch. I think that was about 10 miles in, but it was really beautiful and actually went for a dip in the water. It was cold but lovelyand I stopped there for awhile. Had some lunch then carried on. I ended up going a bit further than I wanted to today because there was just nowhere really to pick up any sooner this is the first rule spot I’ve come to at a sensible time.
