What Do Our Students Learn

The 4Ps Project covers the following areas of radio broadcasting:

Programming

  • Music (explaining and working with Genres, Decades and Styles)

  • Shows (types of shows, including chat shows, music based shows, debates etc)

  • Awareness of appropriate legal requirements

Presenting – How to put together your own show, including the following:

  • How to use a microphone Properly
  • How to Record and present links
  • How to plan, promote, record and produce a radio show
  • How to conduct an Interview
  • How to do all the above so that it fits with the Stations style guide.

Production How to write and produce and edit the following:

The Course In Detail

The 4Ps course typically runs for 10 sessions however this can be spaced over different time frames to suit the individual needs of the student. Now we’ll break down the individual sessions.

Session 1

  • An introduction to radio both on and off air. You will be interviewed on air, The interview is then edited podcast and placed onto the website.
     
  • A topic of debate will be chosen and students will then write, voice, record and produce a 30 Second promo for a debate that will happen in the coming weeks. This may also lead to designing a leaflet/poster to promote on social media.
     
  • Write and record first news bulletin.
     
  • Begin planning the sessions ahead a Documentary, Top 5, Tourism Packages, promos and The 4Ps packages.

Session 2

  • Students will also start to put together a top five favourite songs, Recording and producing six links either side of each song chosen.
     
  • Be part of a live studio environment picking two new stories of the day a national and one local and speaking about them on air. This is then edited produced podcast it and loaded onto the website.
     
  • Start planning a documentary with music and interviews that will consist of three sections totalling 52 minutes which will fit into an hours programming. Subjects could be how the Isle of Wight’s waste is collected, The IW Steam Railway, Eviivo, or something else.
     
  • Research the Lunchtime Social Debate the topic of choice and promote on Facebook.

Session 3

  • Record and produce your top five and podcast.
     
  • Research Debate.
     
  • Record News Bulletin.
     
  • Present live topical debate.
     
  • Edit live topical debate produce for podcast and load onto the website.
     
  • Gather information on Places of interest/ Tourist Destination to work on 3 Projects 1 every other week.

Session 4

  • Gather information and produce a 90 second package on a Isle of Wight tourist destination.
     
  • Create 4Ps jingles using Adobe Audition.
     
  • Work on documentary.
     
  • Be part of a live studio environment picking two new stories of the day a national and one local and speaking about them on air. This is then edited produced podcast it and loaded onto the website.
     
  • Conduct an interview with the on air presenter in a feature called ask me anything which is then edited and podcast it and put onto the website.

Session 5

  • Produce weekend news, roundup of the week’s news or produce a sports package of sporting events happening this weekend on the Isle of Wight.
     
  • Students will work on developing a one hour radio show which has six speech links in using Adobe audition and StationPlaylist programming.
     
  • Be part of a live studio environment picking two new stories of the day a national and one local and speaking about them on air.
     
  • This is then edited produced podcast it and loaded onto the website.
     
  • Work on documentary.

Session 6

  • Gather information and produce a 90 second package on a Isle of Wight tourist destination.
     
  • Edit and podcast the one hour radio show from Session 5.
     
  • Work on documentary.
     
  • Take part in a current affairs debate (Researching topic before going on air at 12 Noon)
     
  • Edit and podcast that current affairs debate.

Session 7

  • Produce weekend news, roundup of the week’s news or produce a sports package of sporting events happening this weekend on the Isle of Wight.
     
  • Continue to work and produce documentary.
     
  • Produce a promo about your time on the 4Ps.
     
  • Be part of a live studio environment picking two new stories of the day a national and one local and speaking about them on air. This is then edited produced podcast it and loaded onto the website.
     
  • Produce weekend news, roundup of the week’s news or produce a sports package of sporting events happening this weekend on the Isle of Wight.
     
  • Gather information and produce a 90 second package on a Isle of Wight tourist destination.

Session 8

  • Gather information and produce a 90 second package on an Isle of Wight tourist destination.
     
  • Start putting together A best bits showreel.
     
  • Continue to work on documentary.
     
  • Be part of a live studio environment picking two new stories of the day a national and one local and speaking about them on air.
     
  • This is then edited produced podcast it and loaded onto the website.

Session 9

  • Produce weekend news, roundup of the week’s news or produce a sports package of sporting events happening this weekend on the Isle of Wight.
     
  • Finish documentary.
     
  • Work as a co-host on the live broadcast.

Session 10

  • Co-host a whole mid-morning show sourcing topics of discussion and taking part in a live debate.
     
  • Edit podcast produce show place onto the website.
     
  • Put together a show reel best bits of the last 10 weeks together in audio form.
     

Tutor Details

  • The sessions will be primarily delivered by the Director of Vectis Radio, Ian Mac.
     
  • Ian has been in the entertainment industry since 1981 working both in the UK and abroad. Ian has worked specifically in the Radio industry since 1992 as a broadcaster/presenter, producer, and newsreader etc. He previously worked with Radio Victory, Cowes Week Radio, Isle of Wight Radio and Wight FM before setting up Vectis Radio in 2009.
     
  • Ian will be supported in delivering the course by other members of the Vectis Radio team. Ian has developed the idea of the 4Ps course as a means of passing on his extensive knowledge and experience to young people and hopes that the course will not just enable those who undertake it to develop specific broadcasting industry skills but also help more widely in enabling participants to develop their confidence and self esteem as they move into their working careers.
