Astronomy Talk: "Modern Telescopes & Spin-Out Technology" by Dr Sadie Jones

The Talk: A primary focus of the talk will be "useful spin-out technology" that has resulted from the development of modern telescopes and space research, demonstrating the practical impact of astronomy on society.

The Speaker: Dr Sadie Jones is the Outreach Leader for the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Southampton. She coordinates and manages all of the astronomy outreach and public engagement activities for the department. A large part of this involves managing the Soton AstroDome and the undergraduate and PhD students who work with it. She also organises the StarGazing Live events on the university campus and the SETI Cipher Challenge.

In addition to her outreach work, Dr Jones also researches the radio emission from the jets of supermassive black holes at the centres of galaxies. She is also the author of an excellent children’s book “Seren and the Polar Bear Cub”.

The Host: Vectis Astronomical Society (http://www.wightstronomy.org) meets on the 4th Friday of most months, excluding December. The talks are open for non-members to attend. We have a suggested donation of £2.50 for non-members of VAS. The speakers come from all over the country and give a presentation for around 45 minutes, with a chance for questions and answers afterwards.
